Sterling Alpha Group was founded in 2022 by Derek, a quantitative researcher and portfolio manager with more than two decades of experience at leading Canadian financial institutions. His work spans the full spectrum of systematic investing, including factor arbitrage, statistical arbitrage, volatility arbitrage, and multi‑asset strategies across equities, FX, fixed income, and derivatives.
Throughout his career, Derek has traded and researched virtually every major asset class, with a consistent focus on distinguishing true statistical signal from market noise. His work includes alpha discovery, model development, portfolio construction, and execution research, with an emphasis on empirical rigor and the practical realities of deploying systematic strategies in live environments.
In addition to his capital‑markets background, Derek served as Research Director for two major Canadian insurance companies, leading research teams across both casualty and life lines. His insurance work included fraud analytics, pricing models, risk segmentation, and the application of advanced machine‑learning techniques — including large language models — to high‑dimensional actuarial and operational datasets.
After broadening his analytical scope in the insurance sector, Derek has returned to his quantitative roots. Sterling Alpha Group reflects that renewed focus: a hands‑on research initiative dedicated to alpha generation, robust signal extraction, and transparent evaluation of systematic strategies across asset classes. The platform serves as an independent space for experimentation, model development, and the exploration of practical, deployable systematic ideas.
All content is provided strictly for educational and research purposes and should not be interpreted as investment advice. Performance results represent strategies traded solely with personal capital. Sterling Alpha Group does not currently manage external funds or solicit clients, though this may evolve as opportunities arise.
The platform continues to grow as an independent research effort. Collaboration, discussion, and thoughtful perspectives are welcome.
