In addition to his capital‑markets background, Derek served as Research Director for two major Canadian insurance companies, leading research teams across both casualty and life lines. His insurance work included fraud analytics, pricing models, risk segmentation, and the application of advanced machine‑learning techniques — including large language models — to high‑dimensional actuarial and operational datasets.

After broadening his analytical scope in the insurance sector, Derek has returned to his quantitative roots.
